The relationships in your life can shape how you see yourself, express your needs, and experience belonging. You may feel secure with some people and unsure of yourself with others, or notice familiar difficulties across friendships, family relationships, workplace connections, and romantic partnerships.
At The Compassion Practice, we explore these experiences with curiosity about your history, the expectations you carry, and the ways you have learned to protect yourself. We also pay attention to how others treat you and the circumstances surrounding each relationship. Together, we can make sense of recurring patterns, give attention to feelings that are difficult to express, and work toward relationships that support both connection and a stronger sense of self.
We can explore how you understand an interaction, what you communicate, the boundaries you set, and the support you seek. For example, we might look at what makes it difficult to decline a family request or tell a friend that something hurt. In sessions, you can practice expressing what matters and consider how to respond.
Or if the same disagreements keep returning, you may find yourself pursuing a conversation, pulling away, becoming defensive, or leaving important feelings unspoken. We slow down these interactions and explore the hurt, expectations, and needs beneath them.
Whether you are navigating tension with a partner or difficulties in other relationships, therapy offers space to understand what keeps happening and work toward greater clarity, repair, and connection.
Which relationships can I explore in therapy?
You can bring concerns about friends, relatives, romantic partners, coworkers, or other important people. We can also explore loneliness, changing relationships, or difficulty finding a sense of belonging. The focus follows the connections and experiences that matter to you.
Does the other person need to attend?
No, you can work on relationship concerns in individual therapy. We can explore your experience, choices, and boundaries while recognizing the limits of your influence. However, if meeting with the other person might be helpful, we can discuss that possibility and pursue that option if it would be helpful.
Can therapy help if there is no obvious conflict?
Yes, you may feel lonely, disconnected, hesitant to express yourself, or uncertain about how close you want to be to someone else. These experiences can be explored even when no one is arguing and the relationship appears to be going well.
